3D areola tattooing is a form of paramedical tattooing designed to recreate the natural appearance of the areola and nipple using custom pigment, realistic shading, and artistic detail. Although the tattoo is flat to the touch, the use of light, shadow, color, and dimension can create the illusion of a natural-looking nipple and areola.

What Is a 3D Areola Tattoo?
A 3D areola tattoo is a specialized tattoo that restores the appearance of the areola after mastectomy, reconstruction, or nipple loss. Unlike a traditional tattoo, this technique is designed to look soft, natural, and realistic.
Using carefully selected pigments, Michelle customizes the color, shape, size, placement, and shading to complement your body and reconstruction results. The goal is to create a balanced, natural-looking result that helps you feel more complete when you look in the mirror.
This procedure does not create physical projection, but it can create the visual appearance of a dimensional nipple and areola.

Every healing journey is different. Some clients come to Canvas of Courage soon after they have been cleared by their medical team, while others choose this step years after reconstruction. There is no perfect timeline, only the timeline that feels right and safe for you.
When Can I Get a 3D Areola Tattoo?
In most cases, 3D areola tattooing is considered after your breast reconstruction is fully healed and your medical team has cleared you for the procedure.
Because every surgery, scar pattern, skin type, and treatment history is different, Michelle encourages each client to speak with their surgeon or healthcare provider before scheduling. This is especially important if you have had radiation, complications with healing, thin skin, lymphedema, or a history of infection in the breast area.
Your safety and long-term results matter. Canvas of Courage will never rush this step before your body is ready.
What to Expect
Your experience begins with a thoughtful consultation. This is a time to talk through your goals, ask questions, and discuss what you would like your results to look like.
During the design process, Michelle considers:
- Areola color
- Shape and size
- Placement
- Skin tone
- Scarring
- Breast symmetry
- Desired level of realism
- Whether one or both areolas are being tattooed
Every detail is personalized. If you still have one natural areola, the tattoo can be designed to coordinate with it. If both areolas were removed, Michelle will work with you to create a natural look that feels right for your body.
After the initial tattooing session and healing period, clients may also have the option for a follow-up appointment to complete touch-ups, refine pigment, or add additional detail if needed.
